Why I’ll Never Have Another Garage Sale

By creatingorderfromchaos

Over at Creative Organizing, Aby Garvey has kicked off a lively discussion on Garage Sales.  It got me thinking, and I’d like to share with you why I’ll never have another Garage Sale.

Firstly, the time they take to set up, run and pack down far outweighs any financial gain.  Believe me there are a million better ways to spend a Saturday with the ones I love.

Secondly, I resent the intrusion.  I don’t need strangers poring over my things, haggling over prices, turning up way too early (sometimes the day before), inspecting the contents of my garage which are not for sale.  And I don’t need the stuff hanging around, waiting for enough to accumulate to make the Sale worthwhile.

Thirdly, I can think of better ways to get rid of stuff.  Donations to friends – from magazines to books to kitchenware, my friends have benefited from my personal decluttering.  Donations to charity – in Melbourne, where I live, a quick phone call to Diabetes Victoria on 9439 3223 arranges a pickup of my unwanted goods.  There will likely be a similar service where you live.  Or there’s the local Charity Shop, where you can support a charity close to your heart.

And that’s why I’ll never have another Garage Sale.  How about you?
